This report covers Standards Australia activities of MT007 from October 2019 to October 2020.

The proposed Australian Standards to be replaced by adopted ISO Standards and the review of selected Australian Standards have stalled over the past two years for a number of reasons, which includes the process taking extensive time and continues to do so today. This delay has been seen to have caused disruption within industry irrespective of being able to till use withdrawn Standards.

Due to the significant disruption and delay, all proposals for, were reverted back to reinstate current (previous) Standards with no revision except for the Standards that were already replaced by adopted ISO Standards. This will also allow time for the further review where required of any ISO Standards that may meet the Australian industry requirements.

It is also pointed out that the changes made by Standards Australia allow new proposals for adoption of ISO’s or review of current Australian Standards to occur at anytime. Previously, new submissions for new proposals could only be submitted once   year.

The MT-007 Committee met twice this year via teleconference and it was generally agreed that a number of Australian Standards be reinstated as they were. These Standards are as follows...

• AS1065-1988: Non-destructive testing - Ultrasonic testing of carbon and low alloy steel forgings
• AS2083-2005: Calibration blocks and their methods of use in ultrasonic testing
• AS2452.1-2004: Non-destructive testing - Determination of thickness - Determination of wall thickness of pipe by the use of radiography
• AS2574-2000: Non-destructive testing - Ultrasonic testing of ferritic steel castings
• AS1171-1998: Non-destructive testing - Magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic products, components and structures.
• AS2824-2003: Non-destructive testing - Ultrasonic methods - Evaluation and quality classification of metal bearing bonds
• AS3978-2000: Non-destructive testing - Visual inspection of metal products and components
• AS2062-1997: Non-destructive testing - Penetrant testing of products and components
• AS2452.3-2005: Non-destructive testing - Determination of thickness - Use of ultrasonic testing

A number of drafts and ballots were received from this year regarding ISO NDT Standards and are listed as follows:

• ISO 18490:2015 Non-destructive testing – Evaluation of vision acuity of NDT personnel
• ISO/TS 22809:2007 Non-destructive testing – Discontinuities in specimens for use in qualification examinations.
• ISO/TS 18173:2005 Non-destructive testing – General terms and definitions.
• ISO/CD 24543: Non-destructive testing – Acoustic emission testing - Verification of the receiving sensitivity spectra of piezoelectric acoustic emission sensors.
• ISO/NP 5750: Non-destructive testing  Infrared thermography – Electrical equipment testing

Numerous ISO Con-Mon Standards also under went ballots, however they are not included within this report.

Keith Arcus continues as the voting member on the ISO TC 135 SC7 and ensures that he puts forward the interests of the AINDT Committees, its members & MT007 Standards Committee. Keith’s reports do not form part of this report as they are separate and sent to the Standards Australia Manager.

With the adoption of some ISO Standards comes the opportunity for Australian delegates to take their place on the related ISO Committees. Depending on the ISO Standard and our status, we may commence immediately as a participating member or be subject to being an observer member and after a brief period moving into a participating member.

The past years have been extraordinarily difficult, with COVID causing delays with Standards, a number of NDT project managers coming and going within Standards Australia and the process itself requiring the correct protocols to be undertaken during this difficult period. The MT007 is mindful of these delays and trying to ensure that relevant Standards are back into circulation for industry.

The AINDT Standards News continues to be received very well with enquiries coming my way, which is expected due to some concerns being raised and we will continue to answer all queries from members and industry.
